A wireless extender, or repeater, strengthens a router’s wireless signal and extends coverage, improving performance and enabling devices from a distance to detect and connect to the network. Depending on the model, you can set up your Netgear router to act as a wireless extender and connect it to the main router, or base station, hosting the primary network. Before you can configure the router as a repeater, you must configure the base station to recognize the wireless extender.
Set up the Base Station
- Navigate to “http:/192.168.0.1" or “http:/192.168.1.1" (both without the quotes) in a Web browser to access the Netgear device. Use the second address if the first does not work.
- Enter your administrative credentials, if you’ve not changed the login details, or sign in to the router using “admin” as the username and “password” as the password.
- Select “Wireless Settings” from under Setup. Write down the name of the network, the channel it operates on and the mode it uses.
- Select “WEP,” type a passphrase into the applicable field, and then click “Generate.” Write down the password that appears in the Key 1 field.
- Click “Apply” and then log back in to the network using the new password. Select “LAN Setup” from under Advanced.
- Change the Starting IP Address field from “2” to “3” and then click “Apply.” Select “Wireless Repeating Function” from the Advanced submenu.
- Check “Enable Wireless Repeating Function” and write down the information next to “Wireless MAC of This Router.”
- Click “Wireless Base Station.” Enter into the Repeater MAC Address field the MAC address of the router you’re turning into a repeater. You can find this information on the Wireless Repeating Function screen on the alternate router.
- Click “Apply” to set up the primary router for range extending.
Set up the Extender
- Log in to the other router. Select “Wireless Settings” and change the SSID, channel, mode and security settings so that they match the the settings of the primary router.
- Select “Wireless Repeating Function” from under the Advanced section in the left pane. Check “Enable Wireless Repeating Function.”
- Select “Wireless Repeater” and then enter “192.168.0.2” or “192.168.1.2” — depending on the IP address of the primary router — into the Repeat IP Address field.
- Enter into the Base Station MAC Address field the MAC address of the main router. Click “Apply” to configure the Netgear router as a wireless extender.
