How to Change Channels for Netgear WiFi

Netgear Wi-Fi routers have a channel option, so you can change the channel used by your wireless devices. Typically, channels one and six are used on a Wi-Fi router. If you have several other surrounding network routers using the same channel, it causes interference with the Wi-FI connection and wireless users experience poor reception. You can manually change the channel on the Netgear router to improve wireless performance.

  • Open a Web browser on your desktop. Type the IP address for your router in the navigation text box. The default IP address configured on the router from Netgear is “”
  • Type the administrator user name and password for the Netgear router. The default user name is “admin” and the default password is “password.” After you log in, the browser directs you to the main configuration window.
  • Click the “Wireless Settings” link in the left panel. A window opens with a list of wireless options. Select a new channel in the “Channel” drop-down box.
  • Click the “Apply” button. The router does a soft reboot, and the new channel takes effect in the router settings.
